United States
Scout Sobel is an American entrepreneur and podcaster who founded Scout’s Agency, a public-relations company focused on booking entrepreneurs, authors and other thought leaders as podcast guests. She also co-hosted Okay Sister for six years and wrote The Emotional Entrepreneur. [3][4]
Career and work
Sobel founded Scout’s Agency in 2019 after recognizing podcast appearances as a way for entrepreneurs and brands to reach new audiences. The agency has focused on booking clients as podcast guests and developing podcast-based publicity campaigns. [3]
Before launching the agency, Sobel worked across several entrepreneurial and media projects, including co-founding a magazine, working at a technology startup and co-hosting Okay Sister. [2]
She later published The Emotional Entrepreneur and developed a podcast under the same name. [4]
What has been publicly discussed
- Sobel has publicly identified herself as having bipolar disorder. She has said she was formally diagnosed at age 20, after several years of mental-health difficulties. [2][1]
- Reflecting on the diagnosis later, Sobel recalled that clinicians initially used the term “manic depressive” and that she felt frightened and isolated because she knew little about bipolar disorder at the time. [1]
- Sobel has described depressive episodes beginning in adolescence and later experiencing psychosis, hypomania, anxiety, catatonia and suicidal thoughts. While in college, she said she began losing touch with reality and became convinced that men were following her or hiding nearby to harm her. [1]
- At 19, Sobel was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold in California. She later dropped out of college and described a period when she struggled to function and could not hold a job or internship. [1]
- Sobel has described trying many psychiatric medications and attending two outpatient treatment programs. [1]
- Over time, she said her approach shifted toward intensive daily self-management. She has identified journaling, meditation, movement, nutrition and sleep as core parts of how she manages her mental health, describing self-care as something she treats as non-negotiable. [1]
- Sobel has said that she now feels “safe within my emotional landscape” and that her bipolar disorder no longer frightens her in the way it once did. She describes reaching this point as the result of a long process of learning what helps her manage her emotions and mental health. [1]
- Sobel has spoken openly about bipolar disorder across podcasts, interviews and writing. She has said that she once feared professional clients would reject her because of the diagnosis, but later found that openly discussing it made her feel more human and connected to others. [5]
- She has also framed entrepreneurship as part of the structure that helped her rebuild a sense of purpose and capability. Through The Emotional Entrepreneur, she has connected lessons from managing her mental health with broader discussions of emotions and work. [4]
